June @ MMSS

June has been a very busy month for Mid Murray Support Service Inc. We’ve had lots of activities happening, our support workers have been diligently helping our community and living our vision of “Making Lives Better” and we have some very exciting news regarding our Social Enterprise Scrooges.

Mid Murray Support Service Inc staff and volunteers have all been working hard behind the scenes, organising building repairs and refurbishment of Scrooges Op-Shop following the recent floods that saw our community take a beating. We want to take this opportunity to thank the community for all their patience and continued support during what we all know has been a very trying time for all affected. We are very excited to be able to announce that Scrooges will be re-opening on August 2nd. We are planning to come back bigger and better than ever and are very much looking forward to continuing to be a valuable resource for all.

If you don’t already, we would love for you to give the Scrooges Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/Scroogesopshop) a like. It is there that we will be making further announcements and advertising some of the current stock that we have. At this stage, we will be able to start accepting donations from our opening date, however we have plenty of stock to get us opened thanks to the incredible generosity of the community who has stored store stock for us over the past months, far longer than we would have liked.

We are always on the lookout for community members looking to give back. If you’re interested in volunteering in Scrooges, and doing your part to help make lives better within our community, please give The HUB a call and ask to speak with Leonie, who will be leading the team at Scrooges.

At our Head Offices The HUB at 58 Walker Avenue, we have also recently had solar panels put on. This, in conjunction with our hybrid vehicles used for client transport allows us to continue upon our commitment to care for our community and our environment.

If you have been into The HUB recently, you may have noticed our new addition to our reception area. A new 2 door display freezer for our increasingly popular HUB Homemade Meals. These meals are available to everyone and start at just $10, with subsidies available depending on your circumstances. If you would like to check out our delicious options or discuss what subsidies you may be eligible for, pop in and see us.

With all the excitement of being able to set in a date for Scrooges re-opening, we still haven’t slowed down with our Social Support Groups at The HUB. As always, on the first Tuesday of the month we held our Mystery Bus Trip. For the month of June our trip was titled 'Rustic Hills Charm, and took us to the 'Bremer River Cottage' in Callington for Morning Tea, before the stunning 'Bridgewater Inn' for lunch. It doesn’t get much more 'Rustic' than drinking your coffee amongst English Bantams and Ducks... all of whom are noisily disapproving your presence under what they obviously believe to be 'Their' pergola.

If you're looking to stop for a cuppa or light meal somewhere with a casual atmosphere and friendly service, the Bremer River Cottage is worth your consideration. Lunch at the Bridgewater Inn was an absolute treat, with the raw beauty of the building and location impressing us all. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better the meals came out, and they were huge! 10/10 for not only quality, but price also. Our Mystery Bus Trips runs on the first Tuesday of each month, for July our theme is 'History Showcase'. If you’re interested in coming along to our Mystery Bus Trip, there’s still time to book for our August Trip, held on August 1st with the theme of “Wide Waters’. Spaces for these trips are becoming coveted, so if you’d like to join us, please get your bookings in quickly by calling The HUB on 08 8569 1832.

Yet another HUB Lunch has been and gone, and with June’s theme being 'Down On The Farm', it was only natural that The HUB be full of all things country, including the odd Cow or two! Our kitchen girls did an absolute stellar job of cooking and serving up the best 'Falling off the bone Lamb Shanks' and 'Individual Chicken Pot Pies' around, both of which were complemented beautifully by a dessert of the most delicate banana and strawberry crepes in the area. We had a 'Farm Related' quiz in addition to our usual Best Dressed awards and raffles, with our winner Ronald Smith taking home a hamper of the kind of items only farms can produce!

It was lovely to see many of our attendees walking in through the door dressed the part as either a farm worker or animal, with even some of the MMSS staff dressing up to join in on the fun. Our farm themed movie this month was 'Babe', so once lunch was done and dusted, those who wished to stay and watch it on our big screen got comfy and did so. July's Lunch falls within NAIDOC week and will pay tribute to our indigenous Aboriginal people and their culture. Our usual meal, jokes, raffles etc. will be followed by a big screen viewing of the award-winning movie 'Rabbit Proof Fence', so if you'd like to join us for a fantastic lunch followed by an even better movie, give us a call at 'The HUB' on 8569 1832.

We have so many activities available for the community. Everyone is welcome at all our activities. Contributions for activities may apply. For more information on any activities, or to book, please contact The HUB directly on 08 8569 1832.

Mid Murray Support Service is always on the lookout for ideas and suggestions for new activities or services that our community may be needing. Please feel free to contact us any time either by phone (08 8569 1832), email (reception@mmss.com.au) or our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/midmurraysupportserviceinc) to let us know your ideas.
