April @ MMSS

Mid Murray Support Service has had a busy month. With new clients coming on board every day, we are proud to be working in the community, for the community. We are certainly not afraid to travel to provide supports. We can travel for up to 60 minutes from Mannum (staying within the Mid Murray Council Region) to help with Aged Care and Disability supports.

Feedback that we regularly receive is the difficulty clients have with navigating The Aged Care System.  Our team are well versed in both Home Care Packages and CHSP. If you are having difficulty navigating your way with either CHSP or Home Care Packages please don’t hesitate to contact us at The HUB. Either drop in or call on 8569 1832.

We also provide NDIS support to those with Self-Managed or Package managed Plans. If you have not heard from your Support Coordinator, or you are having issues trying to find a range of quality supports drop in and see us (or pick up the phone and dial 8569 1832) to find out how we can help.

Due to our ever-expanding business, we are on the lookout for experienced, and qualified, support workers. The types of support for delivery are General House Cleaning, Transport, and accompaniment, visiting, Personal Care (showering and grooming), assistance with daily living (such as peg feeding, dealing with seizures, dementia etc), medication prompting and general observation to name a few. If you are interested in working with our multidisciplinary Team, have a great work ethic and want to make a difference in our community buy “Making Lives Better” call in at The HUB and ask to speak to the CEO or 2IC – 58 Walker Ave in Mannum.

Some exciting and highly anticipated news. After long delays, beyond our control, Scrooges Op-Shop will commence its repairs and upgrades within the next couple of weeks. We are very much looking forward to having our Volunteer team back in store and accepting community donations soon. Given the lengthy wait, we have decided to use our time to put it out there that we are looking for a manager who is experienced in merchandise display, marketing, pricing, and rostering and managing volunteers etc. The role is planned for approximately 38 hours per week, inclusive of weekend work.

A Huge Thanks to our wonderful community members who have continued to allow us storage for our Op-Shop items. Without this we would really be struggling. We would again like to ask the community to please be patient and continue holding, for a little bit longer, those pre-loved items that we can fill our store with on opening. It is difficult as a NFP to lose more than 6 to 7 months’ worth of sales from Scrooges so we will be after as much stock as we can handle on re-opening. Please note that larger items will be minimised moving forward as none of us are a young as we used to be, so we have made the conscious decision to minimise larger furniture items and concentrate on clothing, brick-a-brack, and other unusual items that are more easily managed.

The Good Shepherd have arrived at The HUB to support the Mannum and surrounding communities with their No Interest Loans program. You do not pay any interest or fees on your loan – ever.  If you have the capacity to repay exactly what you borrow. These loans are available to anyone with a single income of less than $70,000 or couple with an income of less than $100,000 or anyone that has a Health Care Card or Pension Card or anyone that has experienced family or domestic violence.

Loans are available up to $2,000 ($3,000 if flood affected) for essential goods and services and include, household items, car repairs and registration, medical and dental care, technology, housing and education. The Good Shepherd are operating out of Mid Murray Support Service The HUB on a Monday and Tuesday and can be contacted on 1300 770 550 Monday to Friday 9.00am – 4.00pm where we can process your loan over the phone.

Our Mystery Bus Trip for April was titled 'Vegetation Sensation’ and took us to Karkoo Nursery in Oakbank. Here, getting lost within the endless garden rooms full of pots, urns, water features, sculptures and garden furniture nestled amongst greenery and colour was a given! As if that wasn't enough, there was also a never-ending trail of rustic mill buildings to explore, each housing every type of homeware you could imagine plus much more! The coffee was good, and the scones even better, but with all good things needing to come to an end, we boarded the bus once again to head off to our lunch destination. After much debate about where we may be heading, all was revealed when we pulled up in front of the Mount Torrens Hotel. Here, we recharged our batteries before heading back to Mannum where we bid each other farewell. Next month's Mystery Bus Trip theme is

'Where There's Wine'. If you’ve missed booking your seat, make sure to book in for the next one, and follow along via our Facebook page for updates on our destination.

Our Crafternoon project for April was messy and smelly, but also incredibly fun. We tried our hand at using nail polish poured on hot water to create Marbled Mugs and Wine Glasses. Each piece was a surprise as it came out of the water, and we all enjoyed celebrating each other's beautiful and unique creations. The session ended with an afternoon tea of Chocolate Mud Easter Buns, and we had a great time filling The HUB with laughter and jokes. For our May Crafternoon we will be creating Embellished Butterflies, using sequins, beads, and jewels. Each month sees us create a different piece of art.

We have so many activities available for the community. Everyone is welcome at all our activities. Contributions for activities may apply. For more information on any activities, or to book, please contact The HUB directly on 08 8569 1832.

Mid Murray Support Service is always on the lookout for ideas and suggestions for new activities or services that our community may be needing. Please feel free to contact us any time either by phone (08 8569 1832), email (reception@mmss.com.au) or out Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/midmurraysupportserviceinc) to let us know your ideas.
