May @ MMSS

We have been so busy here at Mid Murray Support Service Inc this past month. With preparations for Scrooges Op Shop to reopen beginning and our Social Support activities proving more and more popular within the community we are very busy.

You may notice us a little more prominently within the community now. We are so excited to have just rolled out our branded uniforms! We now have lovely, embroidered polo shirts, jackets, and cardigans to identify us within the community. This is something that has been in the pipeline for quite some time, and we are so happy that it has finally come to fruition. If you see us out and about, be sure to say “Hi”.

This May we also celebrated National Volunteer Week, held from the 15th through 21st of May. Although our current volunteer force has been significantly reduced due to the forced closure of our Social Enterprise Scrooges Op Shop - MMSS Making Lives Better we still have many volunteers as part of our team helping transport clients and serve the wider community at The HUB.

We would like to thank each and every volunteer, past, present and future for all the work they do for us and our community. You are the Change Makers, and you help us with our mission: Making Lives Better.

Scrooges Op Shop remains closed for the time being, however, we have received word that works to repair damage to the building are due to commence soon, and we are working double time behind the scenes to be able to come back bigger and better when we are able to re-open. We will let you know as soon as we have a date via our Facebook Page.

We are also on the lookout for a motivated individual to take on the manager position for Scrooges Op Shop. We are looking for someone who is experienced in merchandise display, marketing, pricing, and rostering and managing volunteers etc. The role is planned for approximately 38 hours per week, inclusive of weekend work. If this sounds like you, please call The HUB on 08 8569 1832 and ask for Jacob or Wink to find out more.

Again, we wish to extend our thanks to our incredible community members who have shown patience and grace, allowing us storage for our Op-Shop items. Our closure was not one we wished to happen, let alone for it to take so long for us to be able to re-open. The loss of income that this has meant for us as a not-for-profit organisation has significantly affected our resources, and we are so grateful that due to the generosity of the community, we will have stock to be able to hit the ground running when we are eventually able to welcome you all back through the doors.

Although sunshine was ordered for our Mystery Bus Trip this month, there was obviously a mix up at the weather office as it was raining as we arrived in Tanunda... sideways at that! Those who were keen enough to brave the wind and rain headed up the street in search of somewhere to get their caffeine fix, before enjoying some time browsing in some of the lovely stores.  With a large proportion of attendees arriving back at the Tanunda Hotel for lunch carrying lolly bags, it wasn't hard to guess which shop had been the overall favourite. After a delicious lunch washed down with a glass or two of wine, we boarded the Bus again for the trip back to Mannum. We finally found the sunshine as we came down Palmer Hill, but isn't that usually the way? Our Mystery Bus Trip for June is titled ‘Rustic Hills Charm’. Check out our Facebook Page for updates on the trip. If you’d like to attend one of our sessions, check out the clues and dates on our website. To book your seat give The HUB a phone call on 08 8569 1832.

Our HUB Lunch this month was themed for Mother’s Day and was an afternoon enjoyed by all. A delicious two course meal had everyone leaving us with full bellies, with many mentioning that dinner would need to be very light. June’s HUB Lunch will see us watching the movie “Babe” with a Farm Life theme. We are excited to see how everyone dresses for the occasion. July will see us celebrate NAIDOC, and we are planning a screening of “Rabbit Proof Fence” to accompany the feast that our kitchen will prepare.

Crafternoon for May again proved popular, with attendees creating their very own Bejewelled Butterfly. There were many shiny, beautiful creations with discussion over the provided afternoon tea about where these stunning pieces of art should live. Pebble Cactus Pots will be made by attendees for June, and in July we will try our hand at making Hydro Dipped Tumblers.

We have so many activities available for the community. Everyone is welcome at all our activities. Contributions for activities may apply. For more information on any activities, or to book, please contact The HUB directly on 08 8569 1832.

Mid Murray Support Service is always on the lookout for ideas and suggestions for new activities or services that our community may be needing. Please feel free to contact us any time either by phone (08 8569 1832), email (reception@mmss.com.au) or out Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/midmurraysupportserviceinc) to let us know your ideas.
