July @ MMSS

Mid Murray Support Service (MMSS) is pleased to announce that after many months of hard work, its Social Enterprise ‘Scrooges’ is scheduled to reopen on August 2nd, 2023.

Since opening the store back in 2012, Scrooges has become a well-recognised store in Mannum, enjoyed by many, and grown to become a valuable resource for Mannum residents, surrounding communities, and visitors.

Scrooges was one of the first businesses to close in mid-November 2022 and will be one of the last to reopen in early August 2023, this will be nearly 8 months since the shop closed this has been a significant loss in funds that go towards helping community.

Scrooges is still recovering after the flood with repairs and improvements. Shoppers will notice an improved country atmosphere, a new name “Scrooges Country Treasures” and a happy Scrooge now front and centre as the store's new mascot. We would also like to welcome our new store manager Leonie, who has been a key piece to the puzzle in us re-opening our doors.

When you donate goods or shop with us you can be assured that you are making a real difference with all proceeds being put back into supporting the local community.

MMSS is always on the lookout for new shop volunteers, so we would love to hear from local community members. You can apply to volunteer at Scrooges by filling out an application form at The HUB, 58 Walker Avenue, Mannum SA 5238. We provide full training no experience is needed, and it’s a great way to make new friends, gain experience and make a difference.

Donations are accepted in-store during our trading hours. 10:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Wednesday to Sunday, 8 Randal Street, Mannum SA 5238.

The MMSS team will support the upcoming Illuminate Adelaide – River Lights event. We will be offering hot jam donuts, drinks, a sausage sizzle, and a special raffle with amazing prizes to help fundraise.

We look forward to seeing you all at our new store and at River Lights 04 – 10 August 2023.

In other news, we have of course had our Social Support Activities running strong as usual at The HUB. Our Mystery Bus Trips are proving a crowd pleaser, with spots for the trip regularly booking out now. Our July trip was titled “History Showcase” and took us all the way down the hill to Adelaide, visiting the Adelaide Museum. There was lots of exercise to be had with some opting to take the stairs for some extra steps, and others taking the lifts up and down. There was certainly some sore legs over the few days after the trip! Some were content to find a place to sit and enjoy the busy sights and sounds of the city passing by while sipping coffee and chatting with friends. Our Mystery Bus Trips are free to be enjoyed as you wish. For August, our trip is clued “Wide Waters”. If you’d like to attend Septembers Mystery Bus Trip, give The HUB a call on 08 8569 1832 to book in for “A Walk in the Park”.

We have also hosted our Crafternoon and HUB Lunch for July, with our attendees creating Hydro Dipped Tumblers for our Crafternoon Session. Our Crafternoons have a set craft and all supplies are included. If you love art and would like to meet some new friends, our full schedule is available on our website, and bookings can be made via The HUB on 08 8569 1832.

The HUB Lunch was as always a hit, this month celebrating NAIDOC with a delicious HUB cooked two course lunch and a screening of the movie, Rabbit Proof Fence. It was an afternoon that was enjoyed by all. Our August theme for HUB Lunch is Red Nose Day. We are looking forward to seeing how our attendees dress for the occasion. We will also be showing the movie Three Man and a Baby. Everyone is welcome to The HUB Lunches, bookings are required and can be made by calling The HUB on 08 8569 1832.

Did you know we deliver Home Care Packages? We can deliver from Level 1 through to Level 4 Home Care Packages. If you or someone you know has a Home Care Package and needs support, or if you’d like more information or support on application to a package, please give our friendly team a call for more information on how we are able to support you.

We are so very grateful to our community for the continued support. Through kindness and compassion we can continue our mission of “Making Lives Better”. We would like to give a special mention and thanks to Tony and Chris Eversham and Steve Metcalf, who have together provided Scrooges with the use of their scaffold to undertake the work for improvement of the facility. Without their wonderful generosity and community spirit, the budget to undertake the work would not have been able to be achieved.
